How I Built a Mastermind That Actually Transforms Lives
By Garin Heslop · March 14, 2026 · 11 min read
Before I built LVL 5 LIFE, I was a member of six different masterminds. Some cost $25K. Some cost $100K. Most of them had two things in common: incredible people in the room, and almost zero actual transformation happening. Members would show up, share wins, swap contacts, and leave exactly the same person they were when they walked in. I decided to build the thing that none of them were.
Why Do Most Masterminds Fail to Create Real Change?
Most masterminds fail because they are designed for information transfer, not identity transformation. They operate on the assumption that if you put successful people in a room together, magic will happen. Sometimes it does. But more often, you get a room full of high achievers performing success for each other instead of doing the uncomfortable work of actual growth.
The second reason most masterminds fail is that they only address one pillar: Wealth. Every hot seat is about revenue, marketing funnels, and scaling. Nobody asks, "How is your marriage?" Nobody says, "When was the last time you exercised?" Nobody addresses the fact that three members in the room are quietly falling apart while smiling for the group photo. I know because I was one of those members.
What Makes LVL 5 LIFE Different From Other Masterminds?
When Yesenia and I designed LVL 5 LIFE, we started with a question most program creators never ask: what does transformation actually require? Not information. Not motivation. Not even accountability in the traditional sense. Transformation requires three things: a framework that addresses the whole person, a container that is safe enough for radical honesty, and a system that measures real progress instead of vanity metrics.
The 5 Pillars Framework is the backbone. Every member is assessed across Health, Relationships, Mindset, Wealth, and Legacy. We track these scores over time. We celebrate progress in the pillars nobody talks about publicly. When a member improves their Relationship score by 20 points, that gets the same recognition as closing a $1M deal, because in the real game of life, it matters more.
How Does the Pod Structure Drive Accountability?
We do not run one big group call where forty people sit on mute. LVL 5 LIFE uses a pod structure: small groups of six to eight members who meet weekly with a dedicated facilitator. These pods become the most honest room in each member's life. Not because we force vulnerability, but because when everyone in the room has stopped pretending, there is nowhere to hide and no reason to.
The pod model works because it creates what psychologists call relational depth. You cannot build trust with forty people on a Zoom call. But you can build deep, life-changing trust with six people who show up every week, who know your real numbers, who have seen you cry, and who call you out when you are avoiding the work. That is the difference between a networking group and a transformation engine.
What Role Does AI Play in a Transformation Program?
One of the biggest breakthroughs in how we built LVL 5 LIFE is our AI coach, ARIA. Here is the problem with traditional coaching: you get one hour a week with a human coach, and then 167 hours of life happens between sessions. ARIA fills that gap. She knows your assessment scores, tracks your progress across all five pillars, and provides guidance 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
ARIA is not a chatbot. She is a coaching engine with five distinct personas: Coach, Visionary, Strategist, Champion, and Accountability. Depending on what you need in the moment, whether that is encouragement, strategy, a gentle challenge, or a hard truth, she adapts. Think of her as the world's most available accountability partner, one who never judges, never forgets your goals, and never lets you off the hook.
Why Are Quarterly Retreats Essential for Transformation?
Virtual connection is powerful but it has a ceiling. That ceiling breaks in person. Our quarterly retreats are not conferences. They are immersive experiences designed to create breakthrough moments that cannot happen on a screen. We have seen members resolve decades-old relationship patterns in a single retreat session. We have seen men who have never cried in front of another person release years of stored pain in a room of brothers who held space for them.
The retreats also include service components. Through the Level 5 Impact Foundation, we build homes for families in need in Ensenada, Mexico. There is nothing that recalibrates your sense of purpose faster than physically building a home for someone who has never had one. It connects our members to the Legacy pillar in a way that no workshop or lecture ever could.
How Do You Measure Real Transformation?
This is the question that separates LVL 5 LIFE from everything else in the market. We measure transformation with the same rigor a business owner measures revenue. Every member takes the Life Assessment at regular intervals. We track pillar scores over time, celebrate movement, identify stagnation, and adjust the coaching strategy based on real data, not feelings.
We also track what we call the Momentum Engine, a composite score that reflects daily habits, weekly engagement, and monthly progress. Combined with the Evolution Phase system, which maps your growth from Awakening through Transcendence, every member has a clear picture of exactly where they are and what the next level requires. No ambiguity. No guessing. Just evidence.
What Would I Tell Someone Considering a Mastermind?
Ask two questions before you write the check. First: does this program address the whole person, or just the business? If it only talks about revenue and marketing, run. You do not need another revenue strategy. You need integration. Second: does this program measure outcomes, or just charge admission? A real transformation program can show you the data. If they cannot, it is a country club with a coaching label.
I built LVL 5 LIFE because I needed it to exist. Every design decision, from the pod structure to the AI coaching to the service retreats, came from a question: what would have changed my life if I had it ten years ago? The answer became the program. And watching our members transform across every pillar, not just the one the world celebrates, is the greatest thing I have ever built.
If you are ready to stop performing success and start living it, apply to LVL 5 LIFE. We are selective because the container only works when every person in it is committed to the real work.
